Kitchen Design Tips: Exciting Lighting

November 18th, 2016

Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing some of the tips that we at The ALNO Store Weybridge give our customers when helping them to design their dream kitchen. This week, we’re going to focus on lighting!

Lighting in the kitchen is essential, whether you need to brighten up a task area, create the ‘wow’ factor or help to create a relaxing atmosphere, your lighting features need to be well thought out and layered.

We begin with the most important, task lighting…

It goes without saying that your kitchen work areas, namely the sink and hob, are well lit, given that this is where lots of your time in the kitchen will be spent.

One way of ensuring this is the case, is by adding integrated spotlights to the underside of your cabinets.

Next, you want to be able to create a relaxing ambience in your kitchen for when you’re entertaining.

There are many ways to add atmospheric lighting to the kitchen, but one particularly popular option is to integrate lighting behind frosted glass front cabinets, as shown in the example to the right.

Not only does this result in a modern and stylish approach to storage, but also offers a source of soft, tranquil light.

Spotlights are great multitaskers. Although they work as source of task lighting, they can also fulfil the role of ambient lighting.  When placed over key areas in your kitchen, spotlights will not only highlight features and improve visibility, but with the addition of a dimming switch, they can also double up as subtle mood lighting.

And finally, feature lighting. This is where you can inject a real 'wow' factor into your kitchen design!

The most common form of feature lighting is pendants, which work perfectly above a kitchen island or breakfast bar, as shown below in our stunning ALNOCERA Convinta kitchen.

LED strips are another great way to add feature lighting to your kitchen.

They accentuate your work surfaces, meaning you can introduce a theatrical new dimension to your kitchen furniture and create a real show piece that is sure to intrigue your guests.

Although there are plenty more lighting ideas to discuss, we hope the tips we have highlighted here have given you an idea of what to think about when considering a kitchen design.
